The death of Marylander Deamonte Driver in early 2007 from an untreated abscessed tooth was seen as a dental call to arms. Newspaper editorial writers wrung their hands. Lawmakers from around the country called for reforms. Even the newly installed president of the American Dental Association (ADA) mentioned Driver's death in his inaugural speech in fall 2007.
