Specialty hospital legislation: A reprieve and an opportunity
A key provision of the Medicare Reform package recently passed by Congress offers hospitals a temporary reprieve from the growing competition of physician-owned niche hospitals in lucrative specialty areas such as cardiology and orthopedics. The bill imposes an 18-month moratorium on physician ownership of and investment in new specialty hospitals, which allows for an in-depth study of the financial ramifications of such facilities on the hospital industry.
