More facilities paying doctors for on-call duty
More than 86% of healthcare organizations nationwide provide on-call coverage at their facilities. Forty-six percent pay voluntary physicians for call; another 43% pay employed physicians to do this, according to the 2005 Physician On-Call Pay Survey, compiled by Sullivan, Cotter and Associates (SCA), Inc., which specializes in developing and implementing compensation and reward programs for healthcare facilities.
In addition to revealing that nearly half of organizations that provide on-call coverage pay for the service, the survey found that certain specialists-namely OB/GYNs, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, and trauma surgeons-receive pay for on-call duty more than other specialties.
