In medieval times, it was virtually unheard of for any self-respecting king or queen not to have a wizard. Wizards, such as the infamous Merlin, kept an eye on competitors, stayed in touch with the sentiments and activities of subjects, predicted the future, sought good fortune, and conjured up a spell or two.
