Consumer-directed healthcare plans, your compensation plan, and your bottom line

Healthcare experts say that by the end of 2006, more than a third of all Americans will participate in a consumer-directed healthcare plan (CDHP). The Center for Studying Health System Change expects health savings accounts (HSA)-accounts funded by patients for medical expenses-to capture 15%-50% of the healthcare market by 2010. These plans offer consumers greater flexibility than traditional prefered provider organizations (PPO), and shift the financial responsibility of medical expenses from the employer to the employee. So far, the market is responding favorably-as of September 2004, approximately 438,000 people chose the new higher-deductible, lower-premium coverage for their healthcare coverage, according to a January 2005 study by the trade association America’s Health Insurance Plans.
