MEET OUR SPEAKERS
Shirley Martin, RN, BSN, MSM, is the OR administrative director at Methodist University Hospital (MUH) in Memphis, TN. Martin has worked within the healthcare industry for 35 years. She is recognized for expertise in analytical and creative thinking and known for an ability to affect successful change through excellent team building and effective communication skills using an outcome oriented leadership style that consistently exceeding service and financial expectations. MUH has a 20-bed operating room utilizing 13-14 suites to serve 9500 patients each year. Surgical services are provided for all patient populations except obstetrics and includes a liver, kidney, and pancreas transplant program. Areas of specific focus within MUH’s OR include reduction of turnover time; starting cases “on time;” reducing turnover time; obtaining and retaining 85% utilization of the OR; obtaining and retaining the best people by creating a work environment in which they can do their best work.

Linda McNew Nelson, RN, BSN, MS, CNS, CNAA-BC, has been the director of nursing for MedCentral Health System, (formerly Mansfield General Hospital), Mansfield, OH since June 1983. Her direct areas of responsibility include operating room, post-anesthetic care unit (PACU), department of outpatient surgery, endoscopy, short-term care, birthing suite, maternity, nursery, special care nursery, and perinatal bereavement. Nelson has also been involved with the surgical information system and other clinical information systems for more than 24 years. Her focus is steadfast for safe quality care and outcomes, productivity, revenue enhancement, and system thinking.

Scott Schmidly, FACHE, is vice president and chief operating officer at Medical City Dallas, a 660-bed quaternary hospital, also home to Medical City Children’s Hospital, located in Dallas. Prior to joining Medical City, Schmidly served as the chief operating officer at Medical Center of Arlington, a 330–bed, tertiary care and rehabilitation facility providing a full range of healthcare services. Schmidly began his healthcare administration career with the Methodist Healthcare System in San Antonio, and has served in various administrative capacities with the SETON Healthcare Network and St. David’s Healthcare System in Austin, TX before assuming his current position. He has extensive experience in service line development, physician partnerships, and organizational transformations.
