The emergency room at North Adams Regional Hospital closed at about 3 p.m. Friday afternoon, and police have cleared the hospital grounds of protesters who'd gathered in an attempt to keep it open. "I know folks want to hold the building," North Adams Mayor Richard Alcombright said. "The reality is the hospital is closed." Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley, who grew up in North Adams, announced Friday an investigation into actions of the hospital's board of trustees. Those actions, she said, may have lead to the rapid deterioration of the North Adams Regional Hospital's finances.
