Surgeries suspended at VA Med Center

St. Louis Post-Dispatch, February 4, 2011
Officials at John Cochran VA Medical Center in St. Louis canceled surgeries indefinitely after finding unclean surgical equipment, less than a year after sterilization errors were discovered in the center's dental clinic. A regular inspection of the equipment found "spots on the (surgical instrument) trays and water stains on at least one surgical instrument," according to a statement from RimaAnn Nelson, director of the medical center. It is unclear how many patients would be affected by the shutdown. Emergency surgeries will be transferred to other locations, and elective procedures will be rescheduled until the problems at the center are corrected, according to the statement.
