Lee Memorial Health System may need insurance boost

News-Press.com, April 10, 2012

When Gov. Rick Scott signed off on a $15 million damage claim against Lee Memorial Health System last month, the organization took it as a sign it may need to spend considerable funds to boost its insurance coverage. If the system does, it would hardly be the first hospital system or government agency to rely on something in addition to Florida's sovereign immunity law. Jackson Memorial, now required to pay an $800,000 claim, relies only on sovereign immunity. What is new, Lee Memorial Health System argues, is the size of such its claim, the largest in Florida against a hospital.
