Females accounted for nearly six in 10 hospital stays, according to Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project data for 2009. Females accounted for 46% of nonmaternal hospitalizations and 48% of the cost. Female hospitalizations for pregnancy and childbirth accounted for 12% of hospitalizations but just 5% of the costs.
