Charity care spending rises 12% at Carolinas Healthcare System

Charlotte Observer, June 16, 2010

Compared to a year ago, the cost of caring for patients who can't pay their medical bills rose 12% to $152 million at Carolinas HealthCare System, hospital system officials said. "That's one of the highest increases we've ever had," said Greg Gombar, chief financial officer for CHS. Despite the rising cost of charity care, the Charlotte-based healthcare system reported net revenue of $101.5 million for the first quarter of 2010. That compares to a loss of $62 million for the first quarter of 2009.
