Patient population still dropping, Miami-based Jackson Health System reports

Miami Herald, June 18, 2010

Cash-strapped Jackson Health System is making good progress in getting faster collections of claims, but the number of patients in its hospitals continues to drop, an executive for the Miami-based system said. At the weekly meeting of the Public Health Trust's Ad Hoc Committee for Sustainability, Interim Chief Financial Officer Ted Shaw reported that accounts receivable had been steadily dropping from over $240 million in January to about $190 million in April, due to the efforts of the Revenue Cycle Department. But, he said, the patient census continues to decline, and if Jackson can't turn that around, the best cost-cutting efforts will be meaningless, the Miami Herald reports.
