Detroit-Area Hospitals to Invest $1.3 Billion in Improvements

The Center for Studying Health System Change, August 30, 2010

Healthcare may be the key to revitalizing Detroit's economy as area hospitals plan to spend more than $1.3 billion in coming years on capital improvements, according to a study from the Center for Studying Health System Change. However, the infrastructure expansion may lead to higher costs for patients if the hospital systems can't attract new patients from outside the Detroit metropolitan area, the report says. Following earlier hospital consolidation, there are several major nonprofit hospital systems in metro Detroit, with each capturing from 11%-18% of inpatient admissions across the market.
