$250K settlement for 87-year-old vet treated at Palo Alto VA

The federal government has agreed to pay $250,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by an 87-year-old veteran who alleged that he became legally blind as a result of negligent medical treatment at the Palo Alto veterans hospital.

David E. Woodward Sr. filed the lawsuit against the U.S. government in March. He was one of eight eye patients receiving treatment at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System that hospital officials contacted in 2009 with news that they had received improper care that may have caused some vision loss. The letters were sent following an internal review the hospital conducted from February to May 2009 of the treatment given to 381 patients who either had glaucoma or were at risk of the disease, which is a leading cause of blindness
