Sequester threatens medical education and patient care

Atlanta Business Chronicle, March 29, 2013

While we don't know the full extent of sequestration's impact, we know that, on a national level, we are facing approximately $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts for the remaining seven months of fiscal year 2013. For example, National Institutes of Health funding would be reduced by $2.5 billion per year, which could mean an annual loss of $18 million in Emory research funding. Also included is an automatic 2 percent reduction in Medicare payments to hospitals and physicians at a time when providers already face a broad range of reimbursement cuts. The projected impact would be a loss of approximately $9 million per year for Emory hospitals.
