Deal reached on online prescription reporting

New York State officials say they have reached a deal on legislation to establish tighter online oversight of prescription drugs to help curb the black market propelled by painkiller addictions and doctor shopping. The measure, expected to take effect next year, would make New York the first state to establish mandatory online reporting of prescriptions in real time, when they are written by doctors and filled by pharmacists. The office of the state attorney general, Eric T. Schneiderman, has pushed the program since last year, and worked with the Cuomo administration and legislative leaders to pass it and other measures intended to curb abuse of hydrocodone and other prescription drugs.
