Like many hospitals, yours may sign per diem contracts with plans under which the plan pays a preset amount for each day a member is an inpatient, regardless of which services the member receives. Your hospital may also negotiate separate, higher rates for surgery and other expensive procedures performed on an outpatient basis, typically as a percentage off billed charges or on a fee schedule.
