Internet2: The next step in advancing Web technology
Internet2 is "not a separate physical network and will not replace the Internet." Rather, it is a consortium working to advance network technology and accelerate the creation of "tomorrow’s" Internet.
The not-for-profit Internet2 consortium ( http://www.internet2.edu ), more properly known as the University Corporation for the Advancement of Internet Development (UCAID), is made up of more than 200 universities. These members are partnering with each other and with industry and government through workgroups and many projects to develop and deploy advanced Internet applications and technologies.
