Ex- Roger Williams hospital CEO Urciuoli reports to prison

Robert A. Urciuoli, the once high flying chief executive of Roger Williams Medical Center, reported to federal prison Tuesday to begin serving time for bribing ex-state Sen. John A. Celona.

Urciuoli turned himself in to the Federal Prison Camp, a minimum security prison for male offenders in Pensacola, Fla., according to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

Urciuoli has fought hard to remain a free man, but his efforts were dampened by a 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals earlier this month when it denied his bid to stay out of prison while he seeks a review of his conviction by the U.S. Supreme Court.

His Boston lawyer, Martin G. Weinberg, said he still intends to appeal to the high court. legal questions remain about the interface between state and federal law, particularly with regard to an "honest services" law often used by prosecutors to target white-collar crime, Weinberg said. The deadline to file with Supreme Court is Oct. 18.
