Info for 14,000 RI, MA patients missing

The Boston Globe / Associated Press, November 8, 2012
Ultrasound images and personal data for about 14,000 patients who visited walk-in facilities of Women & Infants Hospital in Providence, RI and in New Bedford, MA years ago have disappeared. The hospital said it cannot find unencrypted backup tapes containing ultrasound images and records that contained personal information, including names, birthdates and, in some cases, Social Security numbers. The hospital discovered the tapes were missing in September and conducted a thorough, but unsuccessful, search for them. The hospital said it began notifying affected patients on Monday by letter and has set up a call line for anyone with questions.
