Senate Panel Examines Repealing Insurers' Antitrust Exemption
The tit for tat battle between health insurers and Congressional Democrats has been ratcheted higher as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid pushes for repealing the antitrust exemption for medical malpractice companies and health insurance companies, says my colleague Janice Simmons. The battle between Democrats and insurers has intensified since a healthcare reform bill was passed in the Senate Finance committee this week. Health Insurance Cost Tipping Point Inches Closer
In the September issue of HealthLeaders magazine, my colleague Les Masterson asked industry leaders a simple question: Have we reached a point at which the insured will drop coverage in great numbers because they simply can't afford it or find it's not worth the costs? As you would expect, there was disagreement about whether we have reached that tipping point, but everyone agreed that if we're not there yet, we're close. While we'll have more coverage, don't look for so-called healthcare reform to significantly reduce those costs, either.
