Report cited by Obama on hospitals is criticized

New York Times, February 18, 2010

President Obama has praised a few select hospitals like the Mayo Clinic for delivering high-quality care at low costs, but an analysis in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that the praise may be unwarranted, the New York Times reports. Obama received his information about the hospitals from the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care, produced by the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice. But an analysis written by Peter B. Bach, MD, a physician and epidemiologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan, suggests that much of the of the Dartmouth Atlas is flawed and that it should not be used to compare the relative efficiency of hospitals, the Times reports.
