Cleveland Clinic's Marymount Hospital to stop delivering babies

Starting July 1, babies that would have been delivered at Marymount Hospital in Garfield Heights will now be welcomed into the world at either Fairview or Hillcrest hospitals. Marymount President David Kilarski on Tuesday broke the news to hospital employees in a series of meetings throughout the day. Moving labor and delivery services out of Marymount, in Garfield Heights, to Fairview, which is on Cleveland's West Side, and Hillcrest, in Mayfield Heights, is in reaction to the changing face of the patient population, Kilarski said. At Marymount, the number of births have gone down by 30% in just four years, he said. In 2010, less than 700 babies were delivered there, a far cry from the mid-1950s, when around 1,800 babies were delivered there each year. While the number of births go down across Northeast Ohio, Kilarksi said, the needs of an aging population of women continues to grow.
