Once You Have Them, Don't Let IT Staff Get Away

Hiring tech staff or retraining your own people is only half the battle, says Subra Sripada, senior vice president and chief information officer at Beaumont Health System in Royal Oak, MI. You also have to keep them.
“All of your competitors are out there looking for the same people, so how do you protect these resources and the investment you’ve made in them?” he says, describing the market. “Other opportunities open up all the time, and these opportunities create a supply-demand imbalance.”
A number of providers in Michigan have recently contracted with Epic, the same vendor that Beaumont uses for EMRs, so Sripada knows that his 300-odd IT employees could be lured away because of their expertise and experience with what will be a new system to other providers. Sripada already has seen several instances in which Beaumont invested in the training and certification of an employee for IT, only to have that person use those credentials to obtain a job elsewhere.
