Community Benefit Reporting: What It's Not Might Surprise You
Gienna Shaw, for HealthLeaders News
One of my favorite responsibilities here at HealthLeaders Media is editing our series of marketing books. The latest is on community benefit reporting and IRS form 990, Schedule H. In the article, she explains how one surgeon increased referrals 25%, outlining the steps they took—from segmenting the client base to profile the most promising prospective referral sources to "following up and following through." The network dropped the "Caritas" from its hospitals' names and it's also featured less prominently in ads. In this article, reporter Julie Onufrak interviews Beth Rice, principal of the Hingham, MA-based The Rice Co., which helped develop the campaign. [Read More]

Children's Hospital Design Not Childsplay
The outlines of two glowing blue children—Children's Hospital of Wisconsin's logo—stand atop the hospital's new west tower expansion and illuminate the Milwaukee skyline. The new building's walls are covered in over 800 pieces of the hospital's patients' artwork, but that's not where the young patients' influence ends. Every detail of the new wing was designed with its pediatric patients' health, safety, and happiness in mind. "This new facility was built out of necessity," says Sara Silver-Traband, media specialist at Children's Hospital and Health System. [Read More] |

Marketers understand the basics of HIPAA, but there are other uses of patient information—especially with the explosion of new forms of communication, such as social media—where things get a little "fuzzy and dicey," Kate Borton, a HIPAA consultant and author of the book A Marketer's Guide to HIPAA, says in this audio interview. Sandra Nunn, enterprise, content, and information manager for Presbyterian Healthcare Services in New Mexico, also talks about some of the new challenges that healthcare marketers face when it comes to HIPAA compliance. You can hear more from Borton and Nunn in the HealthLeaders Media Webcast, HIPAA Changes: New Compliance Strategies for New Marketing Models. [Listen Now] |
