Live from SHSMD: Like Being There

Maureen Larkin, for HealthLeaders News, October 4, 2007
This morning I attended a seminar about engaging patients online by Neal Linkon, manager of Web communications at Aurora Healthcare in Wisconsin. Neal shared how his organization launched MyAurora, a Web site that not only allows patients to find out about the organization, but lets them do just about everything but sit face-to-face with a doctor.

On MyAurora, users can make appointments to see their doctor, e-mail their doctor's office, renew prescriptions, and register for classes. They can sign up to be a volunteer, make a donation to the hospital, pay their bill, and even browse the hospital's gift shop. MyAurora users can set up pages to update family and friends about their condition, or view the first pictures of the newest addition to the family.

The most amazing thing about MyAurora? Linkon is one of two-and-a-half staff members who created and maintain the site. It was all created in house, with the exception of a section that contains health information--similar to that featured on WebMD.

MyAurora is a great example of what even the smallest hospitals can do to make the patient experience easier and more pleasant.
