Illinois hospital death rates published by state

Chicago Tribune, April 13, 2010

Patients die of common medical conditions more often at some of the Chicago area's best-known hospitals than at other institutions with less sterling reputations, according to a new Illinois report. Medical centers immediately challenged the information, saying it didn't accurately reflect differences in the kinds of patients institutions attract and how seriously ill they are, the Chicago Tribune reports. The data, including death rates for stroke, pneumonia, hip fractures, and congestive heart failure, are posted on the Internet.
