Plea deal in Jackson Memorial patient records theft case questioned

Miami Herald, May 12, 2010
Saying she was fed up with healthcare fraud, a federal judge recoiled from guilty pleas offered by a husband-and-wife duo charged with pilfering patient records from Miami-based Jackson Memorial Hospital to sell to lawyers for injury claims. U.S. District Judge Joan Lenard, expressing "concern," said she couldn't immediately accept the couple's pleas because she didn't think the punishment fit their crime under agreements negotiated with the U.S. Attorney's Office.
