Jackson Health laying off workers, will that help fix problems?
When Jackson Health System cuts 1,117 positions by May 1 and hires up to 355 part-timers to fill in the gaps, Chief Executive Carlos Migoya says that'll be a major step toward fixing the financially struggling public hospitals. He says the move will save $69 million a year in salaries and benefits. But several veteran healthcare experts say he's slashing staff without dealing with larger issues to turn the hospitals around: finding ways to attract more patients, reshaping the system to keep people out of the emergency room and perhaps cutting money-losing services. And union leaders decry the cuts as a threat to patient safety.
