New ICU Technology Creates Eye in the Sky
The eICU at Alegent Health in Omaha, NE, not only manages the vital signs, laboratory tests, and pharmacy data of some 100 patients, it monitors its infection prevention compliance, as well. According to this story by my colleague Evan Sweeney, six nurses in the eICU manage 15 to 20 patients each, in conjunction with on-site ICU staff members, and a physician handles high-risk patients while a pharmacist monitors antimicrobial activity. HIEs start to exchange data
This past week, three regional health information exchanges started exchanging real-time data. The Indiana Health Information Exchange in Indianapolis is now sending information to a small number of physicians in the Bloomington, IN-based HealthLINC and Cincinnati, OH-based HealthBridge networks. Pediatricians in Bloomington, for example, have electronically received test results and reports through the HIEs from specialists in Indianapolis. The HIEs collectively serve more than 15,000 physicians and 50 hospitals, and have more than 12 million patient records. [Read More]
New iPhone application tracks disease outbreaks
Apple iPhone owners can now find out if there are cases of the H1N1 flu virus near them through a new application called "Outbreaks Near Me." The program, which was developed by Children's Hospital Boston and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab, connects to HealthMap, a Web-based resource that disseminates information about outbreaks of infectious diseases. Users can report cases of infectious disease and set alerts to be notified if cases are reported in their vicinity. [Read More] |
