Now that we're nearly halfway through the last month of the year, I decided to clear out my in-box. In the process, I figured I'd share with you a few e-mail responses I've received recently. As I noted last week, many readers commented on my columns about generational differences. In fact, I posted a question on this topic on HealthLeadersMedia.com. At the time I am writing this, 52 percent of users say Gen X and Y physicians are inferior to previous generations, 27 percent say they are superior, and 20 percent say they are comparable. Court expands scope of doctor liability
A Massachusetts court has set an alarming precedent by ruling that a physician can be sued over a car accident caused by a patient, according to this Boston Globe story. The court allowed the mother of a boy who was hit by a car and died to sue the physician who prescribed medications that caused drowsiness to the driver. Lawyers argued that the physician was at fault for failing to warn the patient about the dangers of the medicine. [Read More]

This New Yorker article examines Peter Pronovost's efforts to improve medical care delivery, specifically, how a simple checklist was able to "transform intensive care." It's an excellent read and illustrates the importance of process improvement and management in patient care. "If a new drug were as effective at saving lives as Peter Pronovost's checklist, there would be a nationwide marketing campaign urging doctors to use it," writes author Atul Gawande, who's also a physician. Open-access scheduling improves care, morale
Practices that are implementing advanced open-access scheduling--a model in which daily schedules are left partially open for same-day, last-minute appointments--are not only finding that patients prefer it, but physicians are happier as well. Open-access allows physicians to spend more time with patients and is linked to improved care, and the American Academy of Family Physicians is testing the model nationwide to better assess its effectiveness. White House wants to tie Medicare payment fix to IT standards
Physicians may get the reversal of the 10 percent Medicare payment cut they have been asking and lobbying for, but it will come with catch--the Bush administration wants to tie any legislation that blocks the cut to mandatory information technology standards. Many say it's too soon to require physicians to adopt health IT. But if legislation isn't passed to reverse it, the 10 percent cut will go into effect January 1. [Read More] |
