It seems such a simple thing, the notion of apologizing to patients when providers screw up. Yet full disclosure is still a novelty in most hospitals. Doctors and lawyers still worry that the admission of guilt will increase lawsuits, even though the systems that have implemented full disclosure policies (Stanford, Johns Hopkins, University of Illinois) have seen a marked decrease in malpractice filings. Unlike most states where malpractice insurance rates keep rising, Texas rates are dropping thanks to the competitive malpractice insurance market and legislation that limits medical liability.
