Doctors face payment cuts for patients on Medicare
It's been a week of ups and downs for doctors hoping to escape planned payment cuts for patients on Medicare. The U.S. House voted Tuesday to pass legislation that would void a 10.6% pay cut for doctors who treat Medicare patients, but the Senate failed by two votes Thursday to call up the bill. The payment cuts will begin July 1, and while there's a chance lawmakers will vote to retroactively increase those payments if legislation goes through, nothing will happen until after the July 4 holiday. Cardiac surgeons joining UPMC from other hospitals
Two prominent independent cardiac surgeons in Pittsburgh have decided to close up shop and join UPMC as full-time employees. This is just the latest example of independent physicians opting to be hospital-employed, a trend that might help hospitals like UPMC but hurts others that can no longer share doctors' talents and time. Most senior leaders want their docs to be hospital-employed, but a community hospital CEO recently told me she's worried. Will smaller hospitals be able to compete with the salaries of larger institutions? Will there be enough doctors to go around? [Read More]
Patients rarely use online ratings to pick physicians
After all the hubbub about physician ratings, it turns out most patients don't pay attention to them anyway. According to a poll commissioned in California, only about a quarter of the state's residents look at online physician ratings, and only 2% of those surveyed said they'd changed their physician because of ratings. I'm not surprised. In fact, I've never looked up my doctor's rating. [Read More]
