Frist family looks to China
The family that helped create HCA Inc. is entering into global hospital management. The Tennessean reports that the Frist family has started a Nashville-based company called China Healthcare Corp. to bring the U.S. model of healthcare management to China. The startup would own a 70% stake in the joint venture, and the government of Ningbo would own the remaining 30%. The agreement is pending approval, and Chuck Elcan, president of China Healthcare, admits it's a risky venture. But he says if it works out, the company may expand operations over time. [Read More]

U.K. doctors will face annual assessments of competence
The U.K. is proposing one way to improve patient safety: ax poor performing doctors. Under Liam Donaldson's plan, physicians would face an annual review of their competency plus recertification every five years. According to The Independent, the annual assessments will review physicians' prescribing habits, patient assessments, and even personal issues that might impact their work.
