High death rates spark concern

Are consumer-driven health plans growing in popularity?
Not in Iowa apparently. A report from employee-benefits consultant David P. Lind & Associates shows that 17% of 954 Iowa businesses were offering consumer-driven health plans combined with a health savings account this year, down from 26% in 2007. Yet a survey by Indianapolis-based United Benefit Advisors Inc. reveals that the total number of consumer-driven health plans increased by 43% over 2007, accounting for nearly 13% of all plans offered by employers. Grassley seeks information about hospital with ties to the Obamas
Two initiatives at the University of Chicago Medical Center aimed at connecting low-income residents with neighborhood health clinics and lowering the number of people seeking nonurgent care at the center's emergency room are being investigated by Sen. Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, the ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee. Grassley is seeking information from the medical center about these programs and the jobs held by Sen. Barack Obama's wife and one of the senator's close friends. According to Grassley's letter, he was "troubled" that the medical center "appears to be culling the least profitable patients from its emergency room." [Read More]
