In the years ahead, I think we'll see hospitals ramping up their fundraising efforts and viewing philanthropy not just as a nice add-on, but as a crucial component to their capital improvement efforts and bottom line. Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago is hoping to raise $600 million from its community for a new hospital through its "Heroes for Life" campaign-it's raised $400 million to date. Likewise, Parkland Memorial Hospital's kicked off its first capital campaign and hopes to raise $150 million to help build a new Dallas County public hospital. Traveling for care—in the U.S.
Some employers are encouraging employees to travel abroad for medical care in an effort to save money on healthcare costs. This Wall Street Journal article (subscription required) describes how U.S. hospitals are starting to get in on the action by offering to match the prices of foreign facilities in order to get those patients to travel to their facility instead. Watchdog for troubled hospitals
A high percentage of employees at Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Hospital have criminal records and performed poorly on tests that evaluated their competency to treat patients. But this was news to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, which is now considering hiring a permanent independent investigator—much like the special counsel for the sheriff's department—to ensure that hospital administrators can't hide problems from them in the future.
