Death rate 70% lower at top hospitals
The 11th annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America Study found that the death rate at top-ranked U.S. hospitals is 70% lower than at the lowest-ranked hospitals. The study examined 41 million patient records from roughly 5,000 hospitals for three years, and it concluded that 237,420 Medicare patient deaths could potentially have been prevented from 2005 to 2007 if all hospitals performed at the level of the top performers. Fifty-four percent of the deaths were associated with four conditions: sepsis, pneumonia, heart failure, respiratory failure. [Read More]
Cancer survivor gives $20 million gift to KU Hospital
Annette Bloch, the widow of H&R Block co-founder Richard Bloch, is donating $20 million to the University of Kansas Hospital. This donation reflects many of the elements needed for successful philanthropy efforts. You need a bit of luck.
