More hospital closures and layoffs
Pontiac, MI-based North Oakland Medical Centers was forced to close after a doctors' group trying to buy the 336-bed hospital failed to find financing to complete the deal. Texas Health Resources is not seeing the growth that it expected and as a result is laying off 49 people—mostly staff positions not directly related to patient care. People are putting off nonurgent medical tests and elective surgeries because of the economic downturn, a company spokesman said.
