They're all worthy endeavors, but they're often doomed to fail because they lack sufficient planning, accountability, and support. Public weighs in
President-elect Barack Obama's transition team held roughly 8,500 public meetings since December 15, 2008, to solicit feedback on healthcare reform. These sessions were similar to the Citizens Health Care Working Group's meetings that took place in 2005 and 2006. None of that group's recommendations like guaranteeing health coverage for specific checkups and treatments were ever carried out. A new model of care is needed to take care of the elderly, according to this New York Times article. The number of people over the age of 65 is increasing, while the number of practicing geriatricians is decreasing. The article touts a team approach, with nurses trained in geriatrics and social workers trained in the problems of the elderly, so that they can help physicians provide coordinated care for older patients.
