House votes to expand child health insurance
The House approved an expansion of the State Children's Health Insurance Program this week with a vote of 289 to 139. Expanding health coverage for low-income children is a top priority for President-elect Barack Obama. Shared goals
Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge and its affiliated doctors and Hampden County Physician Associates of Springfield signed an "Alternative Quality Contract" with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts—the state's largest health insurer. Under the agreement, providers earn a flat rate based on the number of patients that they treat, and they can receive higher payments over time by cutting costs and meeting quality targets. The groups involved hope to improve care and lower costs by having shared goals. [Read More]
Probe investigates whether Kaiser call centers endanger patients
California is investigating Kaiser Permanente's call centers to ensure that all staff members who make medical decisions are licensed. The probe began in response to nurses' complaints that calls were being mishandled jeopardizing patient care. Kaiser contends that call center employees don't actually make any medical decisions. The state Department of Managed Care is trying to determine whether Kaiser is following a 2003 law that strives to prohibit the use of scripts because they cannot be individualized for every caller.
