Federal regulators identify new problems at California hospital
More trouble for UC Irvine Medical Center, where federal regulators threatened to halt Medicare funding after finding multiple problems at the hospital. UCI had been placed under state supervision last year because of the anesthesiology department's "inability to provide quality healthcare in a safe environment," according to the story. The hospital also shuttered its liver transplant program in 2005 after patients died awaiting transplants while physicians turned down organs later used in transplants elsewhere. This time around, the deficiencies range from the improper handling of food to a patient getting blisters on her buttocks when she wasn't turned for four days. The hospital does have a correction plan and contends every issue has been addressed, but a follow-up inspection still looms. All this while the hospital is trying to move into a new facility. Ohio Medical community collaborates to reduce errors, infections
Collaborations intended to reduce errors and infections are cropping up in various forms in various locations around the country, but this one in Ohio is notable to me because of the broad scope of the participants. The initiative, called Solutions for Patient Safety, uses start-up funding from Cardinal Health's charitable arm and involves 16 adult hospitals, eight children's hospitals, the Ohio Hospital Association, the Ohio Children's Hospital Association, and the Ohio Business Roundtable. A report on the collaborative's progress will be published online in the fall. [Read More]

More delays for women in emergency care?
A brief but intriguing little story here about a study that concludes women are 52% more likely than men to have delayed treatment for cardiac problems by emergency workers. The story doesn't offer much in the way of why this might be so, but given the considerable attention paid to delays within the emergency department, it's interesting to see a study about delays that happen before the patient even arrives at the hospital. CNN story helps surgeon perform operation
One might say this piece is a bit self-congratulatory on the part of CNN, but I think the news organization does a solid job presenting this objectively. A neurosurgeon at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in North Carolina performed what he called "life-saving" brain surgery on a 19-year-old using a handheld fiber-optic device he had read about while surfing on CNN.com just three days earlier. Apparently the surgeon had been unsuccessful in removing the large tumor using more traditional methods, and happened upon the story the same night. [Read More]
