Mayo opens private medical-data Web site Mayo Clinic launched its free, online personal health record this past week, and you don't even have to be a patient to store and organize medical information. Mayo Clinic Health Manager, which uses Microsoft's HealthVault software, will also push out customized information, like reminders for checkups. Currently, it offers advice and reminders for asthma, pregnancy, and immunizations. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes care advice will be added later this year. The advice component is something that could give Mayo an edge over its competitors if consumers start viewing the new site as not just a place to hold information but as a way to get health advice, as well. Lifetime EHR Could Mean Better Healthcare for Veterans The Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs are working together to create a joint electronic health record that will track veterans' health information from the day they enter the military, throughout their military career, and even after retirement. The project's ideal goal would be to devise an interoperable virtual record that can accept and send data to disparate systems, including a DoD facility, VA hospital, contracted commercial hospital, or TRICARE contracted private physician's office. The project is part of an overall increase in funding for the VA that includes $25 billion over the next five years to honor the nation's veterans and expand the services they receive. [Read More]
Bipartisan legislation would increase access to telemedicine The Medicare Telehealth Enhancement Act, House Resolution 2068, would expand Medicare reimbursement to telemedicine facilities in urban and suburban areas. The bill would also provide $30 million in grant funding to help healthcare organizations pay for telehealth equipment and expand support services. [Read More]
