Poorly performing hospitals found near popular travel destinations
An analysis has found that two dozen hospitals near popular U.S. travel destinations have death rates among the worst in the country. In addition, quality ratings on the federal government's Hospital Compare Web site show that one of every four hospitals with high death rates for heart attack, heart failure, or pneumonia are near state parks. "When people make travel plans, they look at many different things: hotels, restaurants, shopping, amusement parks, and beaches," Dia Kuykendall of Visit Florida, the state's public-private tourism agency, told USA Today. Canadians defend healthcare system
Like United Kingdom residents did recently in coming to the defense of their National Health Service, Canadians are defending their country's government-run universal healthcare system, which is called Medicare. Parkway also plans to build or buy more hospitals and expand those it owns in China and India to tap growing demand for healthcare in the two countries, CEO Lim Cheok Peng told Bloomberg News. The healthcare plan has no limits, no deductibles, free medicines, tests, X-rays, eyeglasses, and dental work—all for a flat fee of $250 or less a year. David Warner, a public policy professor at the University of Texas, said that most American retirees enroll in the IMSS system as a form of cheap insurance against medical emergencies, while using private doctors or traveling back to the United States for less urgent care.
