72% of Physicians Support a Public Option

A few weeks ago, I wrote a column about the divisions between physicians on healthcare reform, particularly when it comes to the public option. At the time, I didn't have a recent survey of the general physician population to gauge the sentiment, so I placed the dividing line somewhere between the AMA's endorsement of a bill despite reservations about a public option and some of the more vocal opponents who are actively campaigning against reform.

The Atlantic has pulled together a very handy breakdown of various approaches to malpractice reform, including a chart that rates each method's effectiveness in reducing premiums and defensive medicine while fairly compensating patients and improving safety. Specialized health courts look to be the most effective individual approach, according to this analysis, and unsurprisingly a combination of efforts would achieve most of the goals. Baucus bill would reveal physician-industry ties
Improving the transparency of financial relationships between physicians and drug and device companies has been attempted by some states and even on a voluntary basis by some pharmaceutical companies and providers. But the latest healthcare reform bill, introduced by Senator Max Baucus, would try to tackle that issue at a national level. The legislation calls for drug and medical device companies to file annual reports showing payments to doctors for services such as marketing, education, and research beginning March 31, 2012. Good and bad shortage news from Massachusetts
First the good news: Fewer specialties are facing critical shortages in Massachusetts than in previous years, according to an annual report released this week by the Massachusetts Medical Society. Last year, 12 specialties were facing severe shortages, compared to only seven this year. The bad news is that primary care shortages are getting worse. As Massachusetts has learned, expanding coverage with a limited supply of physicians is a challenge and should be a major part of the healthcare reform debate. [Read

Gienna Shaw takes a look at how providers and patients will ideally interact in a future healthcare system, and she doesn't pull any punches in criticizing doctors for their role in obstructing the type of high-tech, patient-centered care that many healthcare leaders envision. Predictably, resistance to electronic health records is a big problem. Physicians often don't see the cost-benefit of investing in expensive technology today, but perhaps they should think long term.
