The key to success for any business is not necessarily improving the service they provide, but improving the customer's overall experience. As an example in healthcare he pointed to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where every room looks out onto healing gardens and careful attention is paid to landscape and design. Building the successful hospital of the future requires attracting the best physicians, nurses, and support staff—and creating a patient care environment that keeps them around. Hospital leaders face the divergent challenges of managing the workforce in today's economy while building the workforce to succeed in tomorrow's healthcare system. Panelists at HealthLeaders Media '09: The Hospital of the Future Now conference in Chicago tackled this topic on Thursday, and offered five strategies for attracting the talent of the future, starting with "define your values." Organizational values only take hold if they are internalized throughout the workforce, HealthLeaders Media Editor Elyas Bakhtiari reported from the event. K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital has a new doctor. Dr. Bernard wears green scrubs and a red stethoscope and has four fingers and floppy brown ears. By the way, he's a dog. The Neptune, NJ, hospital, which is part of Meridian Health System, created the cartoon character to increase brand awareness, develop relationships with young families, and build a database for ongoing communications for events and promotions. Judges for the HealthLeaders Media Marketing Awards gave the organization the large hospital best in show award for the effort. [Read More]
