Marathon of Meaningful Use, EHR Standards Just Beginning
Just in time to ring in the new year, CMS and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Improvement Technology released two anxiously-awaited regulations providing both the definition of "meaningful use" of electronic health records and the standards to improve the efficiency of health information technology used nationwide by hospitals and physicians. The initial set of criteria will focus on collecting data electronically, sharing this data with other healthcare providers and patients, and finally reporting the measures to the government. The second stage of criteria would be proposed by the end of 2011. This will focus on structured information exchange and continuous quality improvement. Florida AG Calls for Legal Review of Mandate in Federal Healthcare Legislation
Did someone say obstacles to healthcare reform? Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum says his office will conduct a legal review of the healthcare bills in Congress to determine the constitutionality of the individual mandate that makes health insurance a requirement. And on Dec. 30, 13 state attorneys general said in a letter to Congressional leaders that they will sue unless lawmakers remove a deal that gives Nebraska a break on Medicaid payments in exchange for that state's Democratic senator's vote for healthcare reform. The law violates the Constitution because it amounts to a tax break for citizens of one state, the group says. [Read
