Heartland Health CEO Talks Value
Philip Betbeze, Senior Editor-Leadership
St. Joseph, MO, would hardly be the place that many would think could provide a model for healthcare value in the new decade. They said the same thing about Danville, PA (home to Geisinger Health System), yet during the healthcare reform debate, that system has consistently been referenced as an example of how coordinated patient care can be delivered at a value price with high quality. I recently talked with St. Joseph-based Heartland Health's physician CEO, Mark Laney, MD, who is a believer in the Mayo model, and is incorporating parts of it at Heartland. [Read More] |

VA, Kaiser Permanente Unveil Project to Exchange Patient Data Electronically This story might fly under the radar a little, but if it fulfills its promise, the pilot project might allow hospitals and health systems across the country to better share medical records and improve the coordination of care. One of the big goals of healthcare reform is to reduce duplication of services and care. The new system will allow exchange—with a patient's permission—of electronic health record data about health issues, medications, and allergies for the first time, reports my colleague Janice Simmons. Not surprising that one of the solutions to cost control might come out of a public-private partnership like this. [Read

Insurers Finding New Ways to Connect with Members My colleague Les Masterson struck a nerve with his recent commentary about his confusion upon reading a mailing from his health insurer—incidentally, also my insurance company. At least I'm not alone in thinking I should be able to make sense of it since I cover the business of healthcare, but sometimes I can't. Anyway, Les takes a look at the consumer outreach movement among health insurers and finds some hopeful signs. [Read

Current EMRs May Be More Helpful With Billing Than Care Coordination If they say it's not about the money, it's about the money—especially when they're talking about electronic medical records. At least that's the conclusion researchers at the Center for Studying Health System Change reached when they released an analysis of tools that many policymakers expect to further the concept of coordination of care. Current ambulatory care EMRs are designed to promote care coordination within a practice by making information available at the point of care. However, they actually appear less helpful for exchanging information across physician practices and care settings. [Read

Healthcare Spending Growth Slowed in 2008, But Still Outpaced GDP, Says CMS Healthcare spending in the United States grew 4.4% in 2008, to $2.3 trillion or $7,681 per person, the slowest rate of growth since the federal government started officially tracking expenditures in 1960, CMS reported this week. Even with the slower growth, however, healthcare spending continued to outpace overall economic growth, which grew by 2.6% in 2008 as measured by the Gross Domestic Product. The findings are included in a report by CMS' Office of the Actuary. [Read

Breakthroughs: Aligning Hospitals and Physicians Toward Value The current relationship between hospitals and physicians has been built around rewarding for volume of services and not quality. That model is breaking down as reformers in Washington have hospital and physician inefficiency in their sights, with Medicare pushing toward value-based purchasing and experimenting with a payment system that rewards a system of coordinated care. In this HealthLeaders Media Breakthroughs report that you can download for free, four leading hospital systems—Gundersen Lutheran Health System, Sanford Health-MeritCare, SSM Health Care, and Virginia Mason Medical Center—share the lessons they have learned about adding quality to healthcare.
