For most of us, watching 2009 recede in the rearview mirror is a pleasant sight. Good riddance to a lousy year and a lousy decade! But even within the worst economic climate since the Great Depression, 2009 was not such a bad year for job growth in the healthcare sector—which includes everything from hospitals to outpatient surgery centers to podiatrists' offices—when compared with the overall economy. Healthcare Created 267,000 New Jobs in 2009
As I note in my column this week, the healthcare sector continues to be one of the bright spots in the still-sputtering economy. The healthcare sector created 267,000 new jobs in 2009, including 22,000 payroll additions in December, new Bureau of Labor Statistics preliminary data show. Of the 22,000 new jobs in the healthcare sector in December, the biggest job growth came from physicians' offices, with 9,000 payroll additions. The overall economy shed 85,000 jobs in December as the nation's unemployment rate remained unchanged at 10%, according to BLS preliminary data. [Read More]
Healthcare Online Job Ads on Upswing
In more promising news from the healthcare job front, a new report shows that the growth of overall online job listings in most employment sectors ended 2009 on a positive note in December, with demand for healthcare practitioners, technicians, and support personnel leading the rally. [Read More]
Union and Hospital System Agree on Pandemic Pact
The California Nurses Association has worked pandemic flu preparation into its new labor agreement with Catholic Healthcare West. The agreement covers personal protective equipment, and promotes communication between union rank-and-file members and hospital management via a joint task force charged with limiting the spread of seasonal and H1N1 swine flu. The settlement involves 13,000 registered nurses in 32 CHW facilities in California and Nevada who are represented by CNA and its affiliate, the National Nurses Organizing Committee. [Read More]
Unions rally to oppose a tax on health insurance
Labor leaders are against President Obama's endorsement of a tax on high-priced, employer-sponsored health insurance policies as a way to help cover the cost of healthcare reform. The unions are pushing to have that tax dropped from the legislation, or at the very least they want the price threshold raised so that the tax would affect fewer workers. Many Democrats and union officials fear the tax could create a rift between the White House and labor, with some union leaders hinting they might lobby aggressively against the entire healthcare bill if it contains such a tax, the New York Times reports. BOSTON: Brigham executive to lead Boston Medical Center
Boston Medical Center has tapped a high-ranking executive from Brigham and Women's Hospital to become its next president and chief executive. Kate Walsh, who has been executive vice president and chief operating officer at Brigham for the past five years, will take over at Boston Medical on March 1. She succeeds Elaine Ullian, who will step down Jan. 29 after running Boston Medical for 14 years. [Read More]
JACKSONVILLE: Solantic walk-in clinics name new board chair
Solantic walk-in urgent care has appointed Charles R. Evans as chairman of the company's board of directors. Evans replaces Rick Scott, who co-founded Solantic with CEO Karen Bowling in 2001. In January 2009, Scott launched Conservatives for Patients' Rights, a media campaign to attack healthcare reform legislation. Evans has been a member of Solantic's advisory board for the past four years. He is president and CEO of Alpharetta, GA-based International Health Services Group, an enterprise that supports health services development in underserved areas of the world, including Kenya, Nigeria, Peru, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic. David M. Cordani, president/CEO of CIGNA Corporation, announced his executive leadership team for the company. The appointments are effective immediately. [Read More]
ORLANDO: Nemours names new practice administrator
Nemours has appointed Raymond Remmer as practice administrator of Nemours Florida. Remmer will be responsible for managing and directing the three Nemours Children's Clinics in Florida (Jacksonville, Orlando, and Pensacola) in support of the physician staff while incorporating best practices that improve efficiency and ensure high-quality patient services. Most recently, Remmer served as director of administrative affairs for the office of the president from 2006-2009. Remmer replaces Bill Winder, who was appointed early last year to a newly created position of senior administrator of Nemours Florida. [Read More]
NASHVILLE: St. Thomas announces physician appointments
Cardiothoracic surgeon David Yandell, MD, has joined the staff of Saint Thomas Hospital and Cardiovascular Surgery Associates. Mark Marsden, MD, was named medical director of St. Thomas Hospital Emergency Department. Plastic surgeon Robert Garza, MD, has joined the staff of Saint Thomas Hospital. [Read More]
LOS ANGELES: The Camden Group heads East
The Camden Group is further expanding its services and geographic reach by adding another senior vice president to its team of advisors, and opening a new office on the East coast. The firm has hired James R. Smith to head its new division based in New York. Smith is a former senior executive at Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield and Greater Rochester Independent Practice Association. [Read More]
