Some Americans receive worse healthcare than others. Some of us are more likely to be uninsured; some of us have poorer outcomes; some have lower health literacy and other obstacles to access. Most would agree that eliminating these care gaps for our fellow citizens should be a top priority. But in all of the debate about reforming healthcare in the last year, very little has been said about the importance of reducing racial and ethnic care disparities. Senate Removes Medicare Payment Cut Delay from Jobs Bill
The AMA got what it wanted Thursday when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) removed a provision from the Senate jobs bill that would have delayed a Medicare payment cut for seven more months. That seems counterintuitive, considering the change makes the 21% cut scheduled for March 1 more likely. But the AMA is taking a gamble: It is opposing any temporary patches in favor of a permanent payment fix, which the House has already passed. The MGMA says medical practice leaders are increasingly frustrated by what it terms the "unnecessarily arduous process" for reporting data to Medicare's Physician Quality Reporting Initiative.
