73% of docs say they practice defensive medicine
Nearly three-quarters of doctors say they have practiced some form of defensive medicine in the last year, according to a new poll by Gallup, Jackson Healthcare, and Newt Gingrich's Center for Health Transformation. The poll also asked how much defensive medicine contributed to overall healthcare spending, and physicians attributed an average of 26% of overall costs to defensive medicine. [Read More]
CMS: Physician Quality Reporting Initiative is Getting Easier
Facing criticism about Medicare's Physician Quality Reporting Initiative, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services officials acknowledged that the PQRI is "difficult and time consuming." Medicare officials say they are working to make the PQRI easier to use. The CMS responded to a Medical Group Management Association survey of physicians that showed widespread frustration about reporting and feedback report requirements, and an "unreasonable lag time" to receive PQRI results. Doctors Oppose Proposed Discount Health Plan Regulations
The influential California Medical Association is trying to block a state effort to strengthen licensing of so-called "discount health plans," saying the regulation would legitimize a business model that's often fraudulent, illegal, and impossible to police. Hospitals Renew Battle to Hire Doctors in California

California currently doesn't allow hospitals to employ physicians, but some doctors want to reverse that, particularly for rural areas.
